About this position
The International Max Planck Research School for Epigenetics, Biophysics and Metabolism (IMPRS-EBM) offers fully-funded PhD positions for talented and motivated students passionate about basic research in the life sciences. This joint program between the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics and the University of Freiburg provides an interdisciplinary research environment, integrating molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, and computational methods. Doctoral researchers benefit from a unique rotation system, spending one month in three different laboratories before selecting their thesis project, allowing exposure to diverse research topics and lab cultures. The program features structured training, individualized mentoring by group leaders, and regular progress monitoring by thesis advisory committees. A comprehensive curriculum covers advanced scientific training, transferable skills, career development, and networking opportunities. IMPRS-EBM doctoral researchers have access to nine state-of-the-art core facilities supporting sophisticated research projects. The program is conducted in English and hosts a vibrant international community, with 55 current doctoral researchers from 25 countries and over 117 alumni. Family-friendly facilities, including a parent-child room and affiliated daycare, are available, and the city of Freiburg offers a high quality of life. Applicants must hold or expect to obtain by September 2025 an MSc, MRes, Diploma, or equivalent degree in Biology, Biomedicine, Chemistry, Physics, or related science, with practical laboratory experience and excellent English skills. Funding details
Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
