About this position

Fully funded PhD positions are open in Condensed Matter Science through the International Max Planck Research School for Condensed Matter Science (IMPRS-CMS) in Stuttgart, Germany. The program is hosted at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in cooperation with the University of Stuttgart.

Research projects span a broad interdisciplinary range, including quantum materials, electronic structure, quantum many-body theory, nanoscience, solid state spectroscopy, solid state ionics and batteries, bioinspired materials, quantum electronics, organic electronics, and ultra-cold atomic gases.

The positions are fully funded and include additional support for scientific meetings and trainings. There are no tuition fees. The doctoral program is structured, taught in English, and offers individual supervision, co-supervision, and mentoring in a vibrant interdisciplinary environment.

Applicants should have an MSc or equivalent degree with a strong background in physics, chemistry, mathematics, materials science, or computer science. A good command of English and basic knowledge of solid-state science are expected. Outstanding BSc graduates may be eligible for a fast-track PhD.

The call is open from 1 August 2026 to 30 September 2026. Applications must be submitted through the online application portal only.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
