About this position
Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, offers a six-month master’s thesis in microbial ecology at its Kastanienbaum site near Lucerne, Switzerland. The project investigates bacterial and archaeal diversity in Swiss lakes as part of the Swiss National Assessment of Lake Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (SNALBES).
The successful student will use approximately 100 lake samples to study microbial community diversity and composition through 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and quantitative PCR. Research will examine how communities vary with geography, altitude, and water physicochemical parameters, and how microbial diversity compares with patterns in other organism groups.
Tasks include DNA extraction, preparation of sequencing samples, qPCR, sequencing-data processing, bioinformatics, and ecological and multivariate statistical analysis in R. Applicants should be enrolled in a master’s program in biology, environmental sciences, microbiology, or a related discipline, and should have an interest in microbial ecology and biodiversity. Experience with molecular methods, bioinformatics, and R is welcome, but willingness to learn is sufficient. Strong spoken and written English is required.
The start date is negotiable, with an anticipated start between now and April 2027. The project lasts approximately six months, with possible adjustments to university master’s requirements. Free student accommodation may be available for the first six months, subject to availability. Applications are due by 30 November 2026 or until the position is filled and must include a one-page application letter, CV, and recent academic transcripts.
