About this position
This fully funded PhD position at KU Leuven, in collaboration with the Belgian Nuclear Research Center (SCK CEN), focuses on optimizing the dissolution and chemical processing of fast reactor MOX (Mixed Oxide) fuel. The research will be conducted within the Radiochemistry (RCA) expert group at SCK CEN in Mol, Belgium, a leading center for nuclear materials research and radiochemical process development. The group specializes in the chemical and radiochemical analysis of nuclear materials, development of innovative radiochemical processes, and production of radio-isotopes and nuclear fuels.
The project addresses the challenges associated with the recycling and reprocessing of high-plutonium-content MOX fuels, particularly those used in next-generation Lead-Cooled Fast Reactors (LFRs) and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). The research aims to develop advanced dissolution methods for MOX fuels that are difficult to dissolve, including electrochemically assisted and ultrasonic-aided techniques. A key objective is to establish a CHON-compliant solvent extraction process for the efficient separation and recycling of plutonium and uranium from both historical and future MOX fuels, minimizing the impact of degradation products and ensuring the purity of recycled materials.
The student will perform radiochemical analysis, measurement uncertainty analysis, UV/Vis spectroscopy, pycnometry, and microscopy as part of the research. The project is supervised by Prof. Koen Binnemans, Professor of Metallurgical Chemistry and head of the SOLVOMET group at KU Leuven. The successful candidate will be affiliated with the Arenberg Doctoral School and will carry out experimental work in the state-of-the-art radiochemical laboratories at SCK CEN.
Applicants must have a Master of Science in Chemistry, with knowledge of solvent extraction and separation chemistry considered an advantage. Strong experimental skills, scientific writing ability, and effective communication are essential. The position offers a 4-year funded PhD opportunity, with a collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment. KU Leuven and SCK CEN are committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity.
The application deadline is March 1, 2026. Interested candidates should apply via the SCK CEN website and may contact Prof. dr. Koen Binnemans for further information.
