About this position

Monash University and the University of Warwick are recruiting for PhD and postdoctoral positions in a Monash–Warwick Alliance project on atomically thin moiré materials for low-energy electronics.

The project sits at the intersection of physics, materials science, and electrical engineering, with a strong emphasis on quantum and nanoscale phenomena. Research areas include moiré metamaterials, control of electronic and topological structures, tunable quantum phases such as superconducting, ferroelectric, and correlated states, machine-learning-accelerated modelling, and low-energy device prototypes built and tested using cleanroom and cryogenic platforms.

The collaboration integrates materials growth, advanced microscopy and spectroscopy, nanoelectronic device fabrication, and theory/modeling across Monash and Warwick. The training environment includes six-month Monash–Warwick research secondments, access to national facilities, specialist training, workshops, seminars, and an interdisciplinary cohort spanning theory, experiment, and device engineering.

Applicants should have a background in Physics or Materials Science, with interest or experience in 2D or quantum materials, nanofabrication or device physics, DFT or computational modelling, and techniques such as STM, ARPES, or cryogenic transport.

Funding: PhD positions are fully funded, including stipend + tuition, for 3.5 years. Postdoctoral fellowships are available for 2–2.5 years.

How to apply: Send a CV, academic transcript (for PhD applicants), and a brief research-interest statement. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Contact Mark Edmonds at [email protected] for more information.
