About this position

The University of Warsaw, Faculty of Physics, Institute of Theoretical Physics, invites applications for a PhD Assistantship in the project "Ultracold polyatomic molecules for controlled chemistry and precision physics," funded by the European Research Council Starting Grant. The position focuses on proposing and theoretically investigating new systems, methods of production, control, manipulation, and applications of ultracold polyatomic molecules, with research spanning controlled chemical reactions and precision measurements. The successful candidate will contribute to expanding the range of quantum phenomena and molecular systems available for experimental study.

Research activities will involve the use and development of electronic structure and quantum scattering theory methods to explore properties of novel ultracold quantum molecular systems and related topics in ultracold quantum many-body physics. The project is highly interdisciplinary, combining aspects of quantum chemistry, computational physics, and quantum technology. The work will be carried out under the supervision of Professor Michał Tomza at the Institute of Theoretical Physics, University of Warsaw.

The position is part-time (30 hours per week) and is offered for up to 15 months, starting July 1, 2026. The remuneration includes a basic salary of PLN 3619 gross/month, additional annual remuneration, allowance for years of service, and an extra salary up to PLN 4000 gross/month. The University provides paid leave, social benefits, and access to sports facilities for employees. The position is funded through the Horizon Europe - ERC program.

Eligibility requires a Master of Science, Master of Science in Engineering, or equivalent degree, with confirmation of admission to the doctoral school before starting work. Candidates should demonstrate knowledge of theoretical methods of ab initio electronic structure calculations and/or nuclear dynamics for small molecules, motivation, independence in scientific problem-solving, and excellent English proficiency. The selection process includes formal and substantive evaluation of documents, interviews, and final assessment of competence and scientific achievements. Candidates must comply with Article 113 of the Law on Higher Education and Science (Journal of Laws of 2024, item 1571).

Interested applicants should submit their application by email to [email protected], including the candidate’s questionnaire, MSc diploma or confirmation, proof of doctoral school admission, a list of at least two independent researchers for references, and other relevant documents. The competition will conclude before June 10, 2026, and candidates will be notified individually of the results. Accessibility needs can be indicated in the candidate’s questionnaire. The University of Warsaw follows an Open, Transparent, and Merit-Based Recruitment Policy.
