About this position

The PhD project focuses on privacy-preserving protocols for digital identity wallets, including the EU Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet. The student will study how cryptographic tools such as zero-knowledge proofs and anonymous credentials can support selective disclosure, pseudonymity, and unlinkability in real-world wallet deployments, while also examining the privacy and security risks that emerge when wallets are used across public and private services.

The work combines protocol design, implementation, and analysis with evaluation through security analysis and user studies. A central research challenge is to balance strong privacy guarantees with security and usability in practice.

The position is based at NTNU Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, within the Department of Information Security and Communication Technology. The PhD candidate will be part of the project Cryptology and social life: Sovereignty, security and society meet digital wallets, and will work closely with three other PhD candidates on interconnected topics in digital wallets and verifiable credentials.

The candidate will also participate in the NTNU Applied Cryptology Lab (NaCl) and engage in international research activities such as conferences and research stays abroad. The department’s broader research environment covers cyber security, information security, communications networks, cryptography, digital forensics, and security in e-health and welfare technology.

What's required

A relevant master's degree in information security, cryptology, computer science, or equivalent is required, including a major independent project of at least 30 ECTS equivalent to a master's thesis. Master students may apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented before starting the position and no later than 2027-08-31. Applicants must have a strong and relevant academic background, with an average grade equivalent to B or better on NTNU's grading scale, or an equally good academic foundation if no letter grades are available; weaker backgrounds may be considered with exceptional suitability. Good oral and written English is required, along with the ability to research in a cross-disciplinary environment. Preferred qualifications include documented experience with applied cryptography or privacy-enhancing technologies, knowledge of digital identity and verifiable credential systems, interest or experience in usable security and privacy or human aspects of security/cryptography, programming skills for implementing cryptographic protocols, relevant publications, and good oral and written Norwegian/Scandinavian language skills.

How to apply

Apply electronically via Jobbnorge.no. Include transcripts and diplomas, CV, a 2-page motivation and research statement on digital identities, a copy or draft of the master's thesis, relevant publications or other research work, certificates for relevant courses or skills, and contact information for three referees.
