The PhD project focuses on privacy-preserving protocols for digital identity wallets , including the EU Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet. The student will study how cryptographic tools such as zero-knowledge proofs and anonymous credentials can support selective disclosure, pseudonymity, and unlinkability in real-world wallet deployments, while also examining the privacy and security risks that emerge when wallets are used across public and private services. The work combines protocol design, impl...

About this position

NTNU—the Norwegian University of Science and Technology—is advertising four PhD Candidate positions within the project Cryptology and Social Life: Sovereignty, Security and Society Meet Digital Wallets, part of the strategic initiative A More Resilient Society.

The project studies the European Union Digital Identity Wallet and its potential role as critical societal infrastructure in Norway and Europe. Research combines cryptology, privacy, cybersecurity, digital identity, information systems, regulation, user autonomy, trust, and social impacts.

The four PhD projects are focused on quantum-safe verifiable credentials; privacy-preserving digital wallets; information systems; and security culture, trust, and society in the age of digital identity. Together, the projects seek robust and usable privacy-enhancing technologies, improved understanding of how digital identity wallets are used and affect society, and provably secure cryptographic designs for quantum-safe wallets that remain usable for ordinary citizens and compatible with their regulatory context.

The positions are full-time, temporary PhD roles based at Høgskoleringen 1, 7491 Trondheim, Norway. The application deadline is 20 November 2026. Applicants should consult the individual vacancy links for project-specific eligibility requirements, documentation, and application instructions.
