The PhD project focuses on privacy-preserving protocols for digital identity wallets , including the EU Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet. The student will study how cryptographic tools such as zero-knowledge proofs and anonymous credentials can support selective disclosure, pseudonymity, and unlinkability in real-world wallet deployments, while also examining the privacy and security risks that emerge when wallets are used across public and private services. The work combines protocol design, impl...

About this position

This PhD position at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is based in the Department of Mathematical Sciences in Trondheim, within a strong international research environment. The project sits in the research group NaCl and involves close cooperation with other PhD candidates working on related topics in digital wallets and identity security.

The research focuses on the security of current wallet designs and on developing quantum-safe, verifiable, privacy-preserving credentials. The doctoral project aims to establish a security baseline for existing wallet architectures and then design new post-quantum and hybrid constructions with accompanying formal security proofs. A major emphasis is on embedding privacy directly into wallet protocols through techniques such as selective disclosure, pseudonymization, and minimal data sharing.

The project is expected to make use of lattice-based cryptography and is connected to the broader NTNU project Cryptology and social life: Sovereignty, security and society meet digital wallets. That project addresses digital identity wallets as a combined technological, organizational, and cultural challenge, with the goal of strengthening Norway’s capacity to deploy and maintain secure, privacy-preserving, democratically aligned digital identity infrastructure.

The position offers the opportunity to contribute to academic publications, dissemination, teaching, international activities, and research visits. It is intended as a full doctoral training path within NTNU’s research and education environment in mathematical sciences.

What's required

Applicants must meet the requirements for admission to the IE Faculty's Doctoral Programme in Mathematical Sciences. A relevant Master's degree in mathematical cryptology or equivalent is required, including a major independent project of at least 30 ECTS equivalent to a master's thesis. Master students may apply if the degree is completed and documented before starting and no later than 2027-08-31. Candidates must have a strong and relevant academic background with an average grade of B or better on NTNU's scale, or an equally strong academic foundation if letter grades are not used; weaker academic backgrounds may still be considered with exceptional suitability, relevant work experience, or peer-reviewed academic work. Applicants must be able to teach and do other career-promoting work, and must have good oral and written English skills. Experience with lattice-based cryptography, zero-knowledge proofs, and verifiable credential systems is preferred, and Norwegian/Scandinavian language skills are a plus.

How to apply

Apply electronically via Jobbnorge.no. Include transcripts and diplomas for Bachelor's and Master's degrees, a CV, a copy of your Master's thesis or draft, relevant publications or other research work, certificates if relevant, and the names and contact information of three referees.
