About this position
PhD Candidate in Quantum-Safe Verifiable Credentials is available at the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway.
The doctoral project is part of Cryptology and social life: Sovereignty, security and society meet digital wallets, funded by NTNU. The research will evaluate the exact security of current digital-wallet designs and develop quantum-safe, verifiable, privacy-preserving credentials. Topics include post-quantum and hybrid cryptographic constructions, formal security proofs, lattice-based cryptography, selective disclosure, pseudonymization, minimal data sharing, zero-knowledge proofs, and secure digital identity wallets. The candidate will participate in the NaCl research group and collaborate closely with other PhD candidates.
Applicants need a relevant Master's degree in mathematical cryptology or an equivalent discipline, including an independent project of at least 30 ECTS equivalent to a master's thesis. A Master's degree must be completed and documented before employment begins, and no later than 31 August 2027. A Master's average of B or better on the NTNU scale is normally required. Experience with lattice-based cryptography, zero-knowledge proofs, or verifiable credential systems is advantageous.
The position involves doctoral study, high-quality research, academic and public dissemination, teaching, international activities, and other career-promoting work. Strong English communication skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are required.
This is a full-time salaried position with a normal gross salary of NOK 580,000 per year, subject to qualifications and seniority, plus a three-year doctoral appointment and one additional year of career-promoting work. The application deadline is 20 November 2026. Applications must be submitted electronically through Jobbnorge with academic transcripts and diplomas, CV, Master's thesis or draft, relevant publications, and details for three referees.
