About this position
The Cardiac Proteomics & Systems Biology Group at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, invites applications for a fully funded PhD fellowship in spatial proteomics of cardiac conduction and disease mechanisms. This opportunity is part of a newly awarded project grant from the Independent Research Fund Denmark, focusing on the project “Deconvolution of the Heartbeat: Spatially Resolved Profiling of Cells and Proteins of the Human Conduction System.”
The research aims to develop and apply advanced methodologies to map the cellular and molecular architecture of the human cardiac conduction system (CCS), which is crucial for coordinated heartbeats and heart rate control. Disruption of CCS components can lead to impaired cardiac function and life-threatening arrhythmias. The project will generate cell type-resolved proteomes of CCS regions, focusing on the sinus node in both animal models and human tissue. Using laser capture microdissection and quantitative mass spectrometry-based proteomics, the PhD fellow will investigate protein remodeling at cellular resolution and gain insights into the biological mechanisms underlying CCS function and arrhythmogenic disease.
Key responsibilities include developing and optimizing spatial proteomics workflows for cardiac tissue, performing quantitative proteomics and data analysis, collaborating on multi-omics investigations of cardiac disease mechanisms, and communicating findings through publications and presentations. The successful candidate will join the Lundby Group, a dynamic, interdisciplinary research environment dedicated to advancing molecular insights into cardiac pathophysiology, with access to state-of-the-art laboratories and core facilities.
Applicants must have an M.Sc. degree in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, or a related field, with a strong academic track record and research experience. Hands-on expertise in mass spectrometry-based proteomics, proteomics data processing, laser capture microdissection, fluorescent microscopy, or cellular and molecular cardiac physiology is required. Strong English communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are essential. The master's degree must be equivalent to a Danish master's degree, and applicants may need to provide an official assessment of their education.
The position is fully funded, offering a monthly salary starting at approximately 31,200 DKK (about 4,170 EUR) plus pension, for a period of 3 years. The workplace is located at Maersk Tower, The Panum Institute, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The application deadline is January 8, 2026, and the suggested start date is between March and September 2026.
To apply, submit an online application via the University of Copenhagen job portal, including a cover letter, CV, relevant diplomas (with English translation if needed), a certified copy of your master's diploma or recent transcript, a list of publications, and contact details for two referees.
