About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Dundee on why the B cell antibody response wanes with ageing.
This project sits within immunology, cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and developmental biology, with a strong focus on B lymphocytes, antibody production, vaccine response, and ageing-associated immune dysfunction. The research aims to uncover the mechanistic basis of reduced antibody production in older B cells.
Students will use quantitative mass spectrometry to map the B cell protein landscape during ageing, alongside single-cell assays to study signalling pathways and protein synthesis capacity under ageing and pharmacological modulation. The project is designed to identify key regulators of protein synthesis in B cells and how these change with age.
Training will include hands-on experience in biochemistry, quantitative proteomics, big data analysis, flow cytometry, and immune phenotyping. This is a strong fit for students interested in translational immunology, ageing biology, and molecular mechanisms of immune regulation.
The project is hosted by the University of Dundee and supervised by Dr Andy Howden and Prof D Cantrell. It is a 4-year funded PhD under the EastBio BBSRC Doctoral Landscape Award, includes a mandatory training programme and a 3-month placement, and is open to UK and international students. Funding covers a stipend at the UKRI standard rate and UK tuition fees, with the university covering the Home-International fee difference.
