PhD opportunity at the University of Oxford, Department of Biochemistry, in the laboratory of Rebecca V Berrens. This project focuses on how human genetic variation shapes transposable element silencing and epigenetic regulation. The successful candidate will explore why some transposable elements remain silent in the genome while others escape repression and potentially affect gene regulation. Research methods and themes include single-cell and long-read sequencing, specifically CELLO-seq and F...

About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Warwick within the Midlands Integrative Biosciences Training Partnership on engineering broad-spectrum phage cocktails and synthetic depolymerases as next-generation antimicrobials against uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC).

The project addresses antibiotic resistance in UPEC, a major cause of urinary tract infections. The research builds on six newly isolated and characterised lytic bacteriophages with broad host-range coverage and putative phage-encoded depolymerases identified in collaboration with the Institute of Biostructure and Bioimaging (CNR, Italy).

Research aims include: assembling and genetically engineering a therapeutic phage cocktail; expressing and purifying synthetic depolymerases and engineered catalytic domains; testing antimicrobial efficacy against clinical UPEC bloodstream isolates; and comparing engineered phages versus depolymerases in a bladder epithelial cell infection model while assessing cytotoxicity.

Relevant study areas include genetic engineering, genetics, genomics, and biological sciences, with strong overlap into biomedical engineering and antimicrobial development. The project is advertised as a funded PhD project for students worldwide.

Location: Coventry, United Kingdom.

Deadline shown on the listing: Monday, November 23, 2026.

Funding details

Funded PhD project for students worldwide. No stipend amount or tuition details are stated in the post.

What's required

Applicants should be interested in genetic engineering, genetics, genomics, and biological sciences. The project involves working with bacteriophages, synthetic depolymerases, clinical UPEC isolates, and a bladder epithelial cell infection model; relevant laboratory and molecular biology skills would be advantageous. The post is advertised as a funded PhD project for students worldwide.
