About this position
This PhD project will advance large-area metasurface optics for quantum technology, with applications in quantum imaging and cold atom trapping. Metaoptics use precisely arranged sub-wavelength nanostructures to create ultra-thin optical components that can control light, polarisation, aberrations, and wavefronts. These devices have the potential to replace bulky lenses and mirrors while making quantum systems smaller, more efficient, and easier to integrate.
The research will investigate the design and development of metasurface optics for next-generation quantum systems. The student will use commercial and custom-built design software, including approaches based on deep learning, to explore metasurface structures and optical performance. The project also includes experimental fabrication using advanced full-wafer nanofabrication tools.
Research will be carried out in the University of Southampton’s leading cleanroom environment, providing training in device fabrication and access to deep-UV lithography and a 200 kV electron-beam lithography system. The work connects with collaborations through the Quantum Sensing Imaging & Timing Hub, including groups at Imperial College London and the University of Bristol, as well as cold atom experiments at Durham University. The project will also support the development of further academic and industrial collaborations.
