About this position
This PhD project at the University of Southampton will develop compact quantum imaging sensors based on multilayer metasurfaces and entanglement-enabled holography. The research aims to recover image information from photon-pair correlations while addressing strong background noise and optical phase distortion.
Metasurfaces are planar nanostructures that shape light. By stacking layers with complementary optical functions, the project will investigate compact modules for beam shaping, beam splitting and polarisation analysis, with the longer-term goal of reducing the size and cost of quantum imaging systems. Potential applications include machine vision and optical inspection of components under challenging illumination.
The doctoral researcher will take device concepts from electromagnetic and quantum photonic modelling through fabrication and experimental testing. The work will examine how layer alignment, optical loss and fabrication tolerances influence imaging performance, and will compare the resilience of the resulting devices with conventional approaches. The project includes substantial hands-on cleanroom work and builds on the team's demonstrated bilayer nanofabrication capability.
Researchers will develop expertise in quantum device engineering within Southampton's Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council Centre for Doctoral Training in Quantum Technology Engineering. The training environment includes technical and commercial development, an industry placement and collaboration with a cohort working across quantum technologies.
Funding details
The project is marked as competition funded. The page directs applicants to the university's fees and funding information, but does not state a stipend amount or specific tuition-fee coverage in the provided text.
What's required
Applicants should have a 2:1 honours degree. Previous nanofabrication experience is not required; the project includes structured cleanroom training. The work involves electromagnetic and quantum photonic modelling, device simulation, fabrication, testing, and quantum imaging experiments.
