About this position
PhD project: Picophotonics: sub-nanometre light–matter interactions, metrology and super-resolution imaging
The University of Southampton is offering a competition-funded Doctor of Philosophy project in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. The research aims to achieve sub-nanometre, atomic-scale optical measurement precision by combining subwavelength light fields, metamaterials, information theory, and artificial intelligence.
The project will investigate optical imaging and metrology at the nanoscale, including light-scattering analysis, thermal and optically driven motion in nanomechanical systems, and the structure and dynamics of metal, semiconductor, and dielectric nanomaterials and devices. Research will be conducted within the Nanophotonics research group and the world-leading Optoelectronics Research Centre, an interdisciplinary environment with extensive photonics facilities and laboratories.
Students may develop expertise in experimental photonics, computational electromagnetic modelling, nanofabrication, machine learning and AI, electron microscopy, and optical microscopy. The programme also offers training in photonics, scientific writing, project management, presentations, and research safety. Students typically have opportunities to publish in leading journals and present at international conferences.
Applicants should hold a 2:1 honours degree and meet the university’s full postgraduate research entry requirements. The project is competition funded; applicants should consult the university’s fees and funding information for current financial details. The closing date is 31 August 2027.
Relevant study areas include Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, and Computer Science, particularly nanophotonics, optical metrology, super-resolution imaging, light–matter interactions, and AI-enabled measurement.
