About this position

Aalborg University is offering a three-year, full-time PhD stipend in thermal modeling and advanced thermal-management solutions for high-power modules and magnetic components. The position is based at the Aalborg campus in Denmark within AAU Energy, the Section of Power Electronics Systems and Materials, and the Sustainable Power Electronics and Electrification research programme.

The PhD project is part of the GreenMag project and focuses on megawatt-class planar magnetic components for future electrification systems. The research will address thermal behaviour, heat-transfer mechanisms, cooling concepts, material choices and thermal reliability while maintaining required electrical and magnetic performance. Activities include multiphysics and finite-element modeling, experimental validation, prototype development, laboratory testing and integration into realistic power-converter systems.

The successful candidate will collaborate with academic and industrial partners, publish results in international journals and conferences, and contribute to teaching and supervision. Applicants should hold a relevant master's degree in Power Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Energy Engineering or a closely related field. Experience with thermal analysis, power electronics, magnetic component design, COMSOL Multiphysics, ANSYS, prototype development or experimental work is advantageous. Strong analytical skills and good written and spoken English are required.

The PhD programme requires 30 ECTS of PhD courses, teaching or knowledge dissemination, and an external research stay outside Aalborg University, preferably lasting 3–6 months. The position is available from 1 December 2026 or soon thereafter. Applications must include a motivation statement, CV, bachelor's and master's diplomas with grades, and other relevant documents. The deadline is 10 November 2026.
