About this position
This PhD project focuses on improving equitable follow-up care for survivors of childhood cancer. The position is embedded in the LATER-EQUITY study, where the research team examines how socioeconomic differences influence access to and use of survivorship care. The project asks why some survivors, especially those from families with lower income or lower educational attainment, may receive less support than they need, and how care can be better aligned with their needs and health literacy.
The student will contribute to a stepwise research programme: first mapping differences in health outcomes and use of follow-up services, then identifying the care needs of survivors with limited financial resources or limited health literacy. A further part of the project is co-creating tools with survivors as co-researchers to support clearer conversations with healthcare professionals and to improve understanding of care information.
The position is based at Radboudumc within the research group Personalized Cancer Care and Survivorship in the department of IQ Health. This group works on optimising oncological care and follow-up by tailoring it to individual risks, needs, and preferences. Its broader research themes include prediction models for personalised treatment and follow-up decisions, home monitoring with patient-reported outcomes, and risk stratification to reduce unnecessary check-ups.
The PhD student will join an active, collaborative research environment with experienced researchers and multiple fellow PhD candidates, and will work closely with the LATER group at the Princess Máxima Center. That group focuses on research for survivors of childhood cancer, with special attention to late effects and treatment-related consequences. The project also involves the Dutch Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (DCCSS) LATER 3 framework and collaboration with survivor representatives and partner organisations.
The supervisory committee named in the advert includes Iris Walraven, Cindy Verberkt, Lieke Feijen, and Heleen van der Pal, with collaboration from Leontien Kremer and the wider survivor care network.
