About this position
Technische Universität Berlin is advertising a PhD position in experimental condensed matter physics within the Ultrafast Nanoscience group and the collaborative research center CRC/TRR227 “Ultrafast Spin Dynamics”.
The project focuses on time- and momentum-resolved studies of electronic and spin dynamics in two-dimensional magnetic materials and their heterostructures. The successful candidate will carry out time-resolved ARPES experiments using high-harmonic generation light sources to investigate ultrafast electron, spin, exciton, and orbital dynamics. The research is aimed at understanding microscopic mechanisms relevant to future spintronic and optoelectronic devices.
The position is embedded in a strong international training environment and offers the opportunity to pursue a doctorate. It is a 0.75 working-time research assistant position, funded for three years, with salary at TV-L E13 (Berliner Hochschulen). The post is in the team of Dr. Tommaso Pincelli within the group of Prof. Ralph Ernstorfer at TU Berlin.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a Master’s degree, Diplom, or equivalent in physics or a closely related field. Good knowledge of German and/or English is required, with willingness to learn the missing language skills. Strong interest in ultrafast spectroscopy, condensed matter physics, and fundamental materials physics is expected. Helpful experience includes photoelectron spectroscopy, femtosecond lasers, ultrafast science, magnetism and spin phenomena, ultra-high vacuum technology, non-linear optics, high harmonics generation, Python, and data/control software such as LabVIEW.
Application deadline: 2026-05-15. Applicants should submit a motivation letter, CV, complete publication list, and contact details of two references. Applications are to be sent to Dr. Tommaso Pincelli, quoting reference number II-49/26, via email or the TU application portal.

What's required
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree, Diplom, or equivalent in physics or a very related field. Good knowledge of German and/or English is required, with willingness to acquire the missing language skills. Strong interest in ultrafast spectroscopy, condensed matter physics, and fundamental materials physics is expected. Prior research experience in spectroscopy methods (optical, X-ray, or electron-based, especially photoelectron spectroscopy), femtosecond lasers or ultrafast science, magnetism and spin phenomena, ultra-high vacuum technology, non-linear optics and high harmonics generation, or high-dimensional data processing/control software such as LabVIEW is desirable. Programming skills in Python and ability to work independently and in a team are also desired.
