About this position

The University of Vienna invites applications for a PhD position as University Assistant (PraeDoc) in the Faculty of Physics, starting May 1, 2026. This four-year, well-funded position is embedded within the Quantum Information Science and Quantum Computation research group, led by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Philip Walther. The group is part of the Quantum Optics, Quantum Nanophysics & Quantum Information cluster and is affiliated with the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ) and the Austrian Cluster of Excellence quantA, making it one of the largest quantum research hubs in Europe.

The research focuses on experimental quantum optics in two-dimensional materials, exploring foundational questions in quantum physics and the interface with gravity. Key topics include table-top experiments to probe quantum foundations, measuring gravitational effects on entangled photons, and developing scalable photonic quantum technologies for quantum computing, machine learning, and cybersecurity. The group leverages advanced techniques such as integrated optics, quantum-dot single-photon sources, customized nonlinear materials, and superconductor-based detectors, as well as precision interferometric measurements of weak gravitational forces.

As a PhD candidate, you will actively participate in research, teaching, and administration. You will join a dynamic team of 35 researchers, ranging from undergraduate students to postdocs, working collaboratively on experimental projects. Responsibilities include contributing to a specific, well-funded research project, presenting your research plan to the faculty, completing a dissertation agreement within 12–18 months (with annual review), assisting in teaching lab courses and exercise classes, and supporting group administration. Outreach activities such as publications, conference presentations, and public engagement are also encouraged.

Eligibility requires a completed Master's degree or Diploma in Physics, with a thesis in quantum optics or nonlinear optics in ultra-thin materials. Candidates should have hands-on experience with table-top experiments, photonic platforms, optical non-linear processes, quantum optics, and 2D materials. Proficiency in academic writing and programming (MATLAB, Python, LaTeX) is expected, along with excellent English communication skills.

The position offers a basic salary of EUR 3,776.10 (40h/week, 14x per annum), with increases for credited professional experience. Employment is for four years, initially limited to 1.5 years and automatically extended unless terminated within the first 12 months. Additional benefits include access to over 600 free internal training and coaching courses, a supportive international academic environment, and excellent public transport connections in Vienna.

The University of Vienna is committed to equal opportunities, diversity, and the advancement of women, especially in leadership roles. Qualified female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. The application deadline is April 25, 2026.

To apply, submit your scientific CV, letter of motivation, bachelor's and master's degrees, title and abstract of your master's thesis, and contact details of two references via the provided application link. For content questions, contact Prof. Philip Walther at [email protected].
