About this position
ETH Zurich’s Geothermal Energy & Geofluids Group in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences invites applications for a full-time PhD position in magnetic resonance applications for porous media.
The project develops and applies multimodal nuclear magnetic resonance and magnetic resonance imaging (NMR/MRI), pulsed-EPR-MRI, and dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) techniques to investigate chemical and physical processes in natural rock and fractured porous media. Research topics may include multicomponent H2O and CO2 flow, radical generation during rock fracturing, water splitting and reactive oxygen species, mineral precipitation, isotope tracing, microbial methanogenesis, crystalline hydration, and geochemical reactions.
The work combines experimental method development with high-pressure fracture experiments, magnetic-resonance characterization, geochemical analysis, microbial ecology, and modeling of fluid migration and storage potential. ETH Zurich provides advanced low-field and high-field multinuclear NMR/MRI, pulsed-EPR-MRI, DNP, XRCT, PIV, and LIF infrastructure.
Candidates should have training in chemistry, physics, engineering, or a similar discipline, relevant NMR, MRI, or EPR experience, and an interest in interdisciplinary research involving geochemistry, geomechanics, microbiology, and energy science. Familiarity with XRD, SEM, or XRCT is beneficial; high-temperature and high-pressure experimental experience is advantageous. Fluency in English is required.
The 100% appointment starts on 1 February 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter, initially for one year with possible annual extensions. It offers a competitive ETH Zurich salary. Apply online with a cover letter, CV, and references or referee contact details.

What's required
Applicants should have a background in chemistry, physics, engineering, or a related field; a strong interest in interdisciplinary research spanning chemistry, physics, geochemistry, geomechanics, microbiology, and energy science; and experience with liquid- or solid-state NMR, MRI, or EPR. Familiarity with XRD, SEM, and XRCT is expected or desirable. Experience designing and performing high-temperature and high-pressure in-situ experiments is advantageous. Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Applications must include a cover letter, CV, and, if available, up to three professional reference letters or contact information for up to three references.
How to apply
Submit the cover letter, CV, and available reference letters or reference contact details through the ETH Zurich online application portal. Applications sent by email or post will not be considered. Direct questions to Adam Altenhof or Xiang-Zhao Kong; they do not accept applications by email.
