About this position

This PhD position in Physics of the Earth is offered at the Geophysical Institute (GPI) of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the Black Forest Observatory (BFO) in Karlsruhe, Germany.

The project focuses on understanding how atmospheric forces deform the Earth’s crust. The successful doctoral researcher will work across the full scientific workflow, from field deployment to modelling and application. A major part of the work is designing and operating a large-N barometer network, building on an already-established field setup with around 90 sensors delivering data from the start.

The research also includes data analysis, inversion, and deterministic, physics-based crustal coupling modelling, with time series analysis carried out in Python. The resulting models will be used to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of high-precision deformation measurements. The position sits within the research environment of KIT’s Geophysical Institute and the Black Forest Observatory, combining observational infrastructure with computational geophysics.
