About this position
Forschungszentrum Jülich is offering a PhD position at the Institute of Climate and Energy Systems – Jülich Systems Analysis (ICE-2), within the Department of Circular Economy. The doctoral project addresses the sustainability of a planned data center supporting the Einstein Telescope, a next-generation gravitational-wave detector that will require extensive computing and data-storage infrastructure.
The research will assess how high-performance computing infrastructure can meet demanding environmental and economic standards. Using prospective life cycle assessment (pLCA), the project will examine environmental impacts, resource use, waste streams, and broader sustainability implications associated with the future data center. A complementary techno-economic analysis will evaluate the system's economic performance.
A key element is an innovative concept for optimizing computing power through the integration of batteries and hydrogen-based energy storage. The doctoral researcher will further develop prospective life cycle assessment methods for data centers, investigate energy-storage options, and analyze how these technologies can be integrated into the overall system while incorporating renewable energy sources.
The project is embedded in a motivated, international, and interdisciplinary research environment focused on climate-neutral energy systems and circular-economy methods. The researcher will present findings at national and international conferences, publish in scientific journals, participate in project meetings, and contribute to a collaborative EU-funded research project with external partners. Doctoral supervision and access to advanced scientific and technical infrastructure are provided at Forschungszentrum Jülich.
