About this position

The University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf is offering a PhD position in vesicle engineering and membrane protein biochemistry within the Translational Oncology group of Prof. Meike Saul at the II. Department of Medicine in Hamburg, Germany.

The project focuses on expressing and purifying membrane proteins and reconstituting them into synthetic lipid vesicles. The engineered vesicles will be characterized for protein incorporation, surface presentation, and vesicle properties. Their cellular uptake will be compared with control vesicles and natural extracellular vesicles in medulloblastoma and non-malignant brain cell models.

Methods include extracellular vesicle isolation, quantitative cellular uptake assays, fluorescence microscopy, image analysis, membrane protein biochemistry, and synthetic vesicle engineering. Experience with liposomes, synthetic vesicles, membrane protein purification, or protein reconstitution is welcome, while prior extracellular vesicle experience is not required. Lipid nanoparticle experience is an additional advantage.

Applicants should have an MSc or equivalent degree in biochemistry, biotechnology, biophysics, chemistry, molecular biology, or a related discipline, together with very good written and spoken English. The position is 65% and initially limited to three years under WissZeitVG, with TVöD/VKA remuneration. Applications are due by 16 November 2026.
