About this position

The division of Applied Mechanics and Energy Conversion (TME) at KU Leuven, embedded in EnergyVille, is offering a PhD position in the Energy Systems Integration and Modeling (ESIM) research group led by Professor Erik Delarue. The group specializes in advanced modeling of energy systems and markets, covering areas such as unit commitment, system planning, equilibrium modeling, agent-based modeling, renewables integration, energy policy, and market design. The research is closely aligned with the EU Green Deal's ambition for carbon neutrality by 2050, focusing on the transformation of energy systems, electrification, and CO2-free electricity generation through renewables.

This PhD project centers on the pricing of heat in district heating networks, leveraging expertise in electricity market design and operation. The research aims to model and evaluate the impact of heat market design and interactions within multi-vector energy systems, including securing revenue streams through waste heat valorisation and energy flexibility services. Additionally, the project will identify and assess financing mechanisms for various district heating solutions. The work is part of a larger international project supported by the EU LIFE programme.

KU Leuven is a leading European university and a key player in energy research, offering a highly specialized doctoral training that will make the candidate an expert in energy systems modeling. The position provides opportunities for collaboration with international partners, participation in conferences, and access to university infrastructure and benefits such as health insurance and sports facilities. The doctoral scholarship includes a net monthly salary of approximately €2,500 for four years.

Applicants should have a Master of Science degree in Engineering or a related field, with excellent academic results. Candidates with backgrounds in economics or operations research are also welcome. A strong interest in energy systems operation, planning, markets, policy, and modeling is essential, and experience with Matlab, Python, GAMS, or Julia is advantageous. Good English communication skills are required. The candidate will benefit from existing energy systems models and expertise within the research group and will collaborate with other members.

To apply, send an email to Prof. Erik Delarue at [email protected] with your name, master degree details, master thesis information, a motivation statement, and an academic CV. Please do not apply via the online system unless invited for the second stage. If you do not receive a response within two weeks, you have not been selected. The position aims for a start date of September 1st, 2026, and applications are reviewed as soon as suitable candidates apply. KU Leuven is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity, and offers support for accessibility and other needs.
