About this position

The University of Limerick, in partnership with University College Dublin, invites applications for fully funded 4-year PhD positions in Statistics, focusing on statistical modelling applications in agriculture. These positions are part of the VistaMilk Research Centre, a leading interdisciplinary collaboration between agri-food, ICT research institutes, and industry partners in Ireland. The research environment is dynamic, with expertise spanning data science, agriculture, food, sensing, communications, and social sciences.

PhD candidates will join either the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Limerick or the School of Mathematics and Statistics at University College Dublin. Two main research projects are available:

  • Project A (UCD): Development of innovative statistical and chemometric methods for Agri-Food infrared spectrometry data, aiming to predict traits and outcomes across the supply chain. This project seeks to unlock the full potential of spectroscopic data for compositional analysis and model deployment in agri-food systems.
  • Project B (UL): Development of spatio-temporal statistical models for water pollution monitoring on river networks. The project will address challenges in sparse data collection and aims to improve understanding of water quality by integrating factors such as agricultural land use, weather, and spatial-temporal data propagation. The research has significant policy implications under the EU Water Framework Directive.

Funding: Each position offers a tax-free stipend of €25,000 per year for four years, with additional support for conference travel and a laptop. Tuition fees for Home/EU students are fully covered, and non-EU students are eligible for a fee waiver from the respective university.

Eligibility: Applicants should hold (or expect to obtain) at least a 2.1 honours degree or equivalent in mathematics, applied mathematics, or statistics. Proficiency in statistical modelling and experience with statistical computing (R, Python, C) are required. Strong communication skills are essential, and experience or interest in probabilistic models, Bayesian inference, or statistical computing is advantageous. Non-native English speakers must meet the English language requirements of the host university. Applications must include a CV, cover letter, transcripts, and referee contacts.
