PhD Positions in Statistics: Statistical Modelling Applications in Agriculture (4-years, Fully Funded) University of Limerick in Ireland

PhD positions are available in Statistics, focusing on statistical modelling applications in agriculture, at either University College Dublin or the University of Limerick, Ireland. These are 4-year, full-time, fully-funded positions within the context of the VistaMilk Research Centre, a leading interdisciplinary collaboration between agri-food, ICT research institutes, and industry partners. The research centre brings together expertise in data science, agriculture, food, sensing, communications, and social sciences, providing a vibrant environment for innovative research.

Potential PhD topics include: (A) the development of innovative statistical and chemometric methods for Agri-Food infrared spectrometry data, aiming to predict traits and outcomes across the supply chain; and (B) the development of spatio-temporal statistical models for water pollution monitoring on river networks, with applications to policy under the EU Water Framework Directive. Both projects offer opportunities to work with real-world data and contribute to impactful research in agri-environmental science.

Supervision will be provided by Professors Brendan Murphy and Claire Gormley (University College Dublin) and Professor James Sweeney (University of Limerick). The positions are based in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at UCD and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UL. The stipend is €25,000 per year (tax free) for four years, with additional funds for conference travel and a laptop. Tuition fees for Home/EU students are covered automatically, and non-EU students may receive a fee waiver from the respective university.

Applicants should have or expect to obtain at least a 2.1 honours degree (or equivalent) in mathematics, applied mathematics, or statistics. Proficiency in statistical modelling and experience with statistical computing (e.g., R, Python, C) are required. Strong communication skills are essential, and experience or interest in probabilistic models, Bayesian inference, and/or statistical computing is advantageous. Non-native English speakers must meet the English language requirements of the relevant university.
