About this position
The University of Bergen's Department of Mathematics invites applications for a PhD Research Fellow position in probability theory. The doctoral project investigates fundamental questions about stochastic processes on networks, with emphasis on models featuring long-range dependence and interactions across space and time.
The fellow will work on mathematical topics including stochastic chains with unbounded memory, interacting particle systems, random networks, stochastic geometry and mathematical statistical mechanics. The research is designed for advanced doctoral study and will be conducted within an active, internationally connected mathematics environment.
The successful candidate will join the research network mSpace, an international European collaboration that offers opportunities for workshops, training schools and research visits. The project also supports collaboration with researchers at partner institutions throughout Europe.
The position is based in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Bergen, whose central Bergen campus provides a broad research and educational setting. A possible teaching component can provide experience in first-year university courses and wider academic development.

What's required
Applicants must hold a master's degree or equivalent in mathematics, applied mathematics or statistics. Master's students may apply if they complete their final master's examination before 2027-03-01, but the degree must be awarded before employment starts. MSc-level competence in relevant mathematics or statistics is required, as are good written and spoken English skills. Coursework in probability theory and related theoretical mathematics is advantageous, as are knowledge or experience with stochastic chains with unbounded memory, interacting particle systems, mathematical statistical mechanics, random networks and stochastic geometry. Good written and spoken Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is advantageous. Applicants must work independently and in a structured manner, demonstrate collaborative skills, and provide evidence of research experience, ambitions and potential where applicable. Applicants must satisfy the University of Bergen's PhD programme admission requirements and comply with export-control regulations.
How to apply
Apply through the Jobbnorge application portal. Upload a motivation and research-interest statement, a detailed qualifications statement, CV, bachelor's and master's transcripts and diplomas, relevant certificates or references, English-proficiency documentation if required, a publication list with links, and contact details for two referees.
