About this position
PhD Research Fellow in Probability Theory at the Department of Mathematics, University of Bergen. The position is part of an internationally connected research environment and is linked to the European research network mSpace, giving the PhD fellow opportunities for workshops, training schools, and research visits across Europe.
The project focuses on probability theory and fundamental questions in the broad area of stochastic processes on networks. The student will work on models with long-range dependence and interactions in space and/or time, contributing to advanced research leading to a doctoral degree. The position is designed for a promising candidate to develop research skills in a strong academic setting while engaging with researchers at partner institutions.
The fellowship is offered within the Department of Mathematics and is associated with a potential fourth year that may include career-promoting activities such as teaching, dissemination, or support for research infrastructure/services. The advertised environment emphasizes collaboration, international links, and doctoral research training within the Faculty of Science and Technology.
The role is based in Bergen and sits within the University of Bergen's mathematics research milieu, with the successful candidate joining an active team working at the interface of probability, stochastic modelling, and networks.

What's required
Applicants must hold a master's degree or equivalent education in mathematics, applied mathematics or statistics. Master students may apply if they complete their final master exam before 2027-03-01, but the master's degree must be awarded before appointment. Candidates need MSc-level competence in mathematics or statistics relevant to the department, good written and spoken English, and preferably coursework in probability theory or related theoretical mathematics. Experience or knowledge in stochastic chains with unbounded memory, interacting particle systems, mathematical statistical mechanics, random networks, and stochastic geometry is an advantage. Good written and spoken Norwegian is also an advantage, as teaching first-year courses may be expected. Applicants should be able to work independently, in a structured manner, and collaboratively; research experience, ambitions, and potential will be considered.
How to apply
