About this position

PhD scholarship: Physics-Informed Machine Learning for Greenland’s Firn Tipping Point

DTU Space, part of the National Space Institute at the Technical University of Denmark, is recruiting a PhD student for a three-year research project on Greenland’s firn and its role in future sea-level rise.

Greenland’s firn—the porous, compacted snow layer on the ice sheet—can currently refreeze a substantial amount of summer meltwater. This storage capacity is finite, however, and the project will investigate the threshold at which firn can no longer retain and refreeze meltwater effectively. This potential firn tipping point is important for understanding the future contribution of the Greenland Ice Sheet to sea-level rise.

The doctoral researcher will combine physics-informed machine learning with satellite data to predict when Greenland’s firn loses its meltwater-storage capacity. The work sits at the intersection of glaciology, remote sensing, climate science, computational physics, mathematical modelling, and machine learning. It is suited to a researcher who wants to translate physical processes into robust computational tools for climate research.

The project follows a recent DFF grant and offers a research environment at DTU Space focused on Earth observation, ice sheets, and advanced computational approaches to environmental science.
