About this position

Empa, a leading research institution within the ETH Domain in Switzerland, is offering a PhD position in Safe and Sustainable Green Electronics. The position is based in the Technology & Society Laboratory (TSL), specifically within the ERAM group, which is renowned for its expertise in safe and sustainable by design (SSbD) approaches, life cycle analysis (LCA), mass flow analysis (MFA), and decision support for sustainable innovation. The successful candidate will contribute to the adaptation and advancement of the SSbD framework in the context of green electronics, with a particular focus on bio-based materials and their applications in agriculture, health, and textiles. The goal is to identify application fields with high environmental sustainability potential.

This PhD position is part of the FERNS project (Holistic integration of eco-Friendly dEsign tools and mateRials, fabrication techNologies for the responsible co-creation of future Sustainable integrated electronic systems), an EU MCSA Doctoral Network that funds 15 PhD positions for three years. The project offers a highly stimulating interdisciplinary research environment, opportunities for collaboration with a network of PhD students, and support for personal and professional development. The candidate will be based at Empa in St. Gallen under the supervision of Claudia Som (principal supervisor), Dr. Roland Hischier, and Prof. Dr. Bernd Nowack (co-supervisors), and will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML) at Leiden University, Netherlands, with Prof. Jose M. Mogollón as doctoral advisor.

Applicants should have a Master's degree in environmental or natural sciences, engineering, or a related field, with experience in computational modeling. Preferred qualifications include experience with LCA, MFA, risk assessment, and green electronics. Excellent communication skills and fluency in English are required. EU mobility rules apply: applicants must not have lived or carried out their main activity in Switzerland for more than 12 months in the past 3 years immediately prior to the call deadline.
