About this position
Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, invites applications for a full-time PhD position in oesophageal and gastric cancer research within the Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery research group.
The doctoral project aims to reduce deaths from oesophago-gastric cancer. Research will examine medications that may affect tumour occurrence or recurrence after treatment, as well as survival-prediction models. The project uses data from a national cohort of patients who underwent oesophago-gastric cancer surgery and national health-data registries across the five Nordic countries.
The PhD candidate will collect and review medical-record data, conduct literature reviews, develop study protocols, manage large datasets, perform statistical and biostatistical analyses, and prepare scientific articles, applications and a doctoral thesis. Participation in PhD courses, seminars, journal clubs, methods clubs, supervisor meetings and international conferences is also expected.
Applicants need a relevant master's-level qualification or equivalent eligibility, and English proficiency equivalent to Swedish English B/English 6. Excellent Swedish and English communication skills are required, as Swedish is needed for reviewing medical records. Research experience, clinical research methodology, biostatistics, cancer research and a medical background are advantageous.
The position is a maximum four-year, 100% doctoral studentship with a contractual salary under Karolinska Institutet's doctoral salary scale. Submit a personal letter, CV, degree projects or publications if available, relevant supporting documentation and eligibility certificates through the Varbi recruitment system by 20 November 2026.
