About this position
PhD Student Position in Quantum Hall Calorimetry of Quantum Materials at the University of Cologne
The University of Cologne is advertising a PhD student position in the Bocquillon Working Group at the Institute of Physics II, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The project is part of an experimental condensed-matter physics programme focused on quantum transport in quantum materials and the development of a new ultra-sensitive quantum calorimeter.
The successful candidate will work on a cutting-edge project exploring how heat flows through exotic quantum materials by combining layered crystals with quantum Hall devices. A first target system is alpha-RuCl3, a prominent candidate for exotic magnetic behaviour, Majorana-like excitations, and quantum spin liquid physics. The project is designed to probe elusive states of matter with unprecedented precision and to contribute to the development of novel measurement techniques.
The position is hosted in the group of Professor Erwann Bocquillon, whose research centres on quantum transport of quantum materials. The project includes collaboration with partners at the University of Tokyo in Japan, offering an international research environment and exposure to advanced experimental work.
Applicants should have an excellent academic record and a Master’s degree in Physics, preferably with a specialisation in Quantum Physics or Condensed Matter Physics. Experience in cryogenic systems, quantum transport measurements, nano-fabrication, and cleanroom techniques is welcomed. Strong English skills, motivation, commitment, communication abilities, and team spirit are expected.
The position is available from 1 January 2027, is part-time (29.87 hours per week), and is fixed term until 31 December 2029. The salary is based on remuneration group 13 TV-L under the German public sector pay scale. The application deadline is 30 November 2026.
Applications must be submitted online via the University of Cologne job portal. Candidates should provide proof of the required qualifications and apply without a photo. Reference number: Wiss2610-07. For questions about the research project, contact Professor Dr Erwann Bocquillon at [email protected]. For application-related questions, contact Dr Matteo Cacco at [email protected].
