About this position
PhD studentship at the University of East Anglia on how perceived heat stress may influence the germline and shape genetic inheritance across generations.
This project asks whether temperature-sensing pathways can prepare or protect reproductive tissues before direct heat damage occurs, using zebrafish as the experimental model. The research combines behavioural conditioning, temperature exposure experiments, multigenerational crosses, and fitness assays in juvenile and adult fish to test whether responses to perceived and actual temperature change are inherited and whether they affect survival or reproduction under later heat stress.
Students will work across molecular, experimental, and computational approaches. Training includes animal husbandry, behavioural work, quantitative PCR, small-RNA and transcriptome sequencing, statistical analysis, and bioinformatics. The project is especially relevant to students interested in genetics, evolutionary biology, molecular biology, ecology, physiology, genomics, reproductive biology, and climate-change adaptation.
The studentship is funded through ARIES and is subject to UKRI terms and conditions. Successful candidates meeting eligibility criteria will receive a fully funded award covering fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 per year for 2026/27, and a research training and support grant. A limited number of studentships are available for international applicants, with the difference between home and international fees waived by the registering university, although relocation and visa-related costs are not covered.
Applicants should be curious, motivated, and collaborative, with a relevant background in the biological sciences. Experience with model organisms, molecular methods, quantitative analysis, bioinformatics, or programming is welcome but not mandatory. The application deadline is 16 December 2026.

What's required
Applicants should have a background in genetics, evolutionary biology, molecular biology, ecology, or a related biological science. A curious, motivated, and collaborative candidate is sought. Prior experience with model organisms, molecular techniques, quantitative analysis, bioinformatics, or programming is desirable but not essential.
How to apply
Apply through the University of East Anglia postgraduate research application portal. Prepare your application for the listed deadline and ensure you meet UKRI eligibility requirements if applying for funded support. International applicants should check fee-waiver eligibility and plan for any visa or relocation costs separately.
