About this position

This PhD project at the University of East Anglia investigates the genomics of mimicry and colour pattern evolution in South American catfishes, focusing on Corydoras and related genera. Mimicry, where species share similar colour patterns to signal unpalatability, is a classic example of natural selection, and this research explores a lesser-known but fascinating system in catfish communities across South America. The project aims to answer three key questions: which genomic regions show divergent selection across mimicry rings, whether there are signatures of selective sweeps in species sharing colour patterns, and if evolutionary rates of pigmentation genes differ between mimetic and non-mimetic species. Using whole-genome resequencing, students will work with high-quality chromosome-level genome sequences and perform additional sequencing of species from different mimicry rings.

The methodology combines molecular biology techniques (DNA extraction, PCR, next-generation sequencing library preparation) with advanced bioinformatics (comparative genome analysis, detection of selection, functional genomics, phylogenetics) and computational skills (UNIX/Linux, HPC computing, programming in R and Python). Most samples are available in the host laboratory, with potential opportunities for fieldwork in South America. The project provides comprehensive training in both laboratory and computational approaches, preparing students for careers in evolutionary genetics, genomics, or bioinformatics.

Applicants should have a degree in biological sciences, genetics, or a related field, a strong interest in evolutionary biology, and an aptitude for bioinformatics; experience with R or another scripting language is advantageous. Entry requirements include at least a UK equivalent Bachelors (Honours) 2:1 and English language proficiency (IELTS 6.5 overall, 6 in each category). The position is full-time and starts on 1 October 2026.

Funding is available through a fully-funded ARIES studentship, covering fees, a maintenance stipend (£20,780 p.a. for 2025/26), and a research training and support grant (RTSG). International applicants may have the difference between 'home' and 'international' fees waived, but relocation, visa, and health surcharge costs are not covered.
