About this position
This postdoc is part of the AmmoniaDrive project at Delft University of Technology and focuses on bringing an ammonia-fuelled SOFC-ICE power, propulsion and energy concept closer to real-world shipboard use. The project addresses the challenge of converting the energy stored in ammonia into useful mechanical or electrical power on board sea-going vessels while preserving range, speed, and operational flexibility.
You will investigate how the NH3-fuelled system performs when integrated into a ship capable of transporting ammonia, using a benchmark vessel with a suitable size and operational profile. The work is strongly centred on ship integration questions, including how the power plant behaves under part-load conditions in port, how it responds to off-design and transient operation, and how energy and power should be managed across different voyage phases.
A major part of the role is system-level modelling and analysis. You will develop and improve modelling approaches for time-domain simulations of ship voyages and port operations, working together with MARIN's Zero Emission Laboratory to assess performance, emissions, and transient loading capability. The project also includes collaboration with industrial partners to gather design and engineering information for a specific case study vessel such as an ammonia or chemical tanker.
The position sits within TU Delft's Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, an international and multidisciplinary environment with strong expertise in mechanical systems, design, and application-oriented research. As part of the wider AmmoniaDrive team, you will be able to draw on insights, developments, and modelling techniques developed by nine PhD researchers in the project, as well as on the experience of maritime partners involved in the consortium.
The project is aimed at solving practical integration and operational challenges for zero-emission ammonia propulsion at sea, with a strong emphasis on performance, safety compliance, and dissemination to both scientific and industrial audiences.
