About this position

Join the Division of Materials and Manufacturing at the Department of Industrial and Materials Science, Chalmers University of Technology, for a postdoctoral research position focused on the characterization of white layers in Hybrid 60 steel. This innovative project aims to analyze the microstructure and thermal stability of white layers formed during hard turning, a process that offers a faster and more energy-efficient alternative to traditional grinding for high-performance steel components. The research will involve advanced materials characterization techniques, including SEM, EBSD, TEM, and APT, as well as thermodynamic and kinetic analyses to develop a physics-based model for ultrahigh-strength surfaces produced by machining.

Chalmers University of Technology is renowned for its commitment to scientific excellence, sustainability, and real-world impact. The Division of Materials and Manufacturing offers a collaborative, international environment with strong industry ties, where you will work alongside passionate researchers dedicated to shaping the future of materials and production. The department actively promotes gender balance, diversity, and inclusion, and provides Swedish language courses for international staff.

The postdoc position is a full-time employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. As an employee, you will enjoy comprehensive benefits, including salary, healthcare, parental leave, subsidized day care, and free schools. The position requires physical presence throughout the employment period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree or equivalent, with strong English communication skills and experience in electron microscopy and machining. Additional qualifications such as recent doctoral graduation, experience with atom probe tomography, and expertise in thermodynamic and kinetic analyses are highly valued. The role includes supervising master’s and/or PhD students, performing beamline experiments, and expanding existing models for white layer formation in Hybrid 60 steel. Teaching opportunities at undergraduate and master’s levels are available, and the position is meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector.

To apply, submit your application via the online form, including a comprehensive CV, publication list, teaching experience, and a personal letter outlining your research background and future goals. Applications must be written in English and submitted as PDF files. The deadline for applications is March 1st, 2026. For further information, contact Professor Uta Klement at [email protected].
