About this position
Postdoctoral position in Multi-user Multi-access Optical Satellite Communications: Theory and Architectures (MOSC) at Eindhoven University of Technology in Eindhoven, Netherlands.
The project develops physical-layer theory and system architectures for multi-user MIMO free-space optical (FSO) satellite communications. The research moves beyond point-to-point laser links toward scalable point-to-m multipoint systems in which one satellite can serve many users or platforms simultaneously. You will define system requirements, channel models and key performance indicators, and analyze capacity, throughput, coverage, latency, availability, security, power efficiency, complexity and cost.
Your work will examine time-, frequency-, space- and code-domain access methods, including TDMA, FDMA, SDMA and hybrid schemes. You will study communication and information-theoretic limits, translate RF massive-MIMO concepts to optical satellite links, and develop analytical frameworks for comparing architectures. Collaboration includes a PhD candidate working on simulation, coding, DSP and demonstrator implementation, as well as applied research partners at TNO and the TU/e ICT Lab.
Applicants need a PhD or near-completed PhD in Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering, Applied Physics, Computer Science or a related discipline, with relevant research experience in communication or information theory, FSO or optical wireless communications, MIMO, coding, signal processing or satellite communications. Analytical modeling, simulation and MATLAB or Python experience are expected; space or defence communications experience is advantageous. Strong publication and teamwork skills and English proficiency at C1 level are required.
This is a two-year, full-time postdoctoral appointment. The salary is €4,422–€5,760 gross per month, plus holiday allowance, year-end bonus and additional employment benefits. Apply online with a cover letter, CV including publications and three references, and up to five best publications. The deadline is 29 November 2026, or earlier if the position is filled.

What's required
Applicants must hold a PhD, or be near completion of a PhD, in Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering, Applied Physics, Computer Science, or a closely related field. A strong research profile is required in one or more of communication theory, information theory, free-space optical communication, optical wireless communication, MIMO systems, coding, signal processing, satellite communications, or related areas. Applicants should be able to define system-level research questions, derive requirements, conduct architectural trade-off analyses, and perform analytical modeling, simulation, or performance evaluation using MATLAB, Python, or similar tools. Experience with free-space optical satellite communications, laser communication terminals, optical beam steering, RF multi-user MIMO, or defence and space communication systems is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate high-quality scientific publishing, clear communication with academic and applied-research partners, independent working ability, interdisciplinary teamwork, interest in co-supervising PhD and MSc students, and fluent spoken and written English at least at C1 level.
How to apply
Apply online through the TU/e Varbi application portal. Submit a cover letter, CV with publication list and contact details for three references, and a list of up to five self-selected best publications. Applications are reviewed until the position is filled; email and postal applications are not accepted.
