About this position
Tu Delft is offering a postdoctoral position in ultrafast spectroscopy on 2D materials for quantum photonics. The project focuses on pump-probe optical and terahertz spectroscopy to study the formation, motion, and decay dynamics of photogenerated charge carriers and excitons in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). The long-term goal is to develop defect-based single-photon emitters in 2D materials for quantum photonic applications.
The successful candidate will work on fundamental studies of how charge carriers and excitons move to intentionally created defect sites such as atomic vacancies and local strain, and how these states contribute to single-photon emission. Experimental work includes ultrafast pump-probe laser spectroscopy with optical techniques such as TA and PL, together with terahertz conductivity detection. Depending on experience and interests, there is also the option to contribute to computational modelling using DFT/GW/BSE methods.
The project is collaborative and interdisciplinary. It involves two PhD students at the University of Amsterdam, where samples and photonic devices will be prepared, and it also connects with industrial partners including Toyota Motor Europe and Quix, a photonic quantum computing startup providing photonic integrated circuits (PICs). This makes the position especially attractive for candidates interested in combining fundamental spectroscopy, 2D materials, and emerging quantum technologies.
The appointment is at the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), within the Faculty of Applied Sciences, an environment with strong research activity in quantum and nanotechnology, photonics, biotechnology, and materials science. The contract duration is 1.5 years on temporary external finance, with a full-time workload of 38–40 hours per week. Salary and benefits follow the Dutch universities collective labour agreement. Additional employment conditions include pension coverage, flexible working arrangements, leave hours, training opportunities, and relocation support for moving to the Netherlands.
Eligibility highlights: a relevant university degree in physics, materials science, or chemistry; experience with ultrafast pump-probe laser spectroscopy; and a PhD degree. Experience with ultrafast laser spectroscopy is explicitly requested, while computational modelling experience is optional.
Application deadline: 15 November 2026. Applicants should apply through the online application button and submit a CV and motivational letter. If shortlisted for interview, candidates will be asked to provide contact details of two referees with consent. Applications sent by email are not accepted.

What's required
A relevant university degree in physics, materials science or chemistry is required, together with experience with ultrafast pump-probe laser spectroscopy. A PhD degree is also required/expected for the postdoc role, and experience with ultrafast laser spectroscopy is specifically mentioned. Depending on background and interests, experience in computational modelling (DFT/GW/BSE) is an advantage but not mandatory.
How to apply
