About this position
This postdoctoral project at Delft University of Technology focuses on the clinical validation of single-camera markerless motion capture for assessing and monitoring motor impairments in people with stroke and Parkinson’s disease. Working in the Department of Biomechanical Engineering, you will help determine how well markerless methods perform when moved beyond the lab into real-world home environments.
The project brings together biomechanical engineering, clinical collaboration, and home-based measurement. You will compare markerless outcome measures with gold-standard marker-based 3D motion capture and musculoskeletal models, evaluate biomechanical plausibility, and test the validity and meaningfulness of these measures for patients, caregivers, and clinicians. A key part of the work is to bridge accuracy in the lab with real-world performance in patients’ homes.
You will also contribute to the development and improvement of a home-based prototype created with Model Health in Leuven, Belgium, and work on clinician-facing visualisation with privacy-by-design considerations. The postdoc is embedded in the multidisciplinary “Care is coming home!” programme, a large consortium spanning technical universities, hospitals, companies, a rehabilitation centre, and patient organisations, offering access to clinical partners, patient environments, and state-of-the-art laboratory facilities.
Supervision is by Dr. Eline van der Kruk and Dr. Ajay Seth.
Funding details
Fully funded postdoctoral position; full-time for one year with the possibility of extension by up to two years.
What's required
Applicants should have a PhD in Biomechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Human Movement Sciences, or a related engineering discipline. Required experience includes hands-on musculoskeletal modelling (e.g., OpenSim, AnyBody) with critical evaluation of model outputs, marker-based 3D motion capture (e.g., Vicon, Qualisys) and force plates from protocol design to data processing, and strong programming skills in Python and/or MATLAB for data processing, analysis pipelines, and statistics. Experience with markerless or video-based pose estimation (e.g., OpenCap) is a plus. Candidates should have experience with or strong motivation to work with patient populations, preferably stroke or Parkinson’s disease, excellent communication and organization skills, willingness to travel regularly to Leuven, clinical sites, and patients’ homes in the Netherlands, and the ability to work independently in a multidisciplinary consortium. Fluency in English is required; Dutch is strongly preferred, and Moroccan Arabic or Turkish is an additional advantage.
