About this position

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is seeking a Postdoctoral researcher (postdoc) for the Resilient Roots project, an interdisciplinary European collaboration with partners in the Netherlands, Sweden, and Spain. The project studies nature-based schoolyards and their role in supporting healthy child development, biodiversity, climate resilience, and broader community wellbeing.

The successful candidate will work exclusively on the Resilient Roots project and will be based in the Netherlands. The postdoc will contribute to project coordination and management, including progress monitoring and reporting, while also leading a research strand on how nature-based schoolyards support community use and wellbeing.

Research activities include case studies in four European cities, using observations, surveys, stakeholder interviews, and participatory co-design to develop strategies that improve community use and wellbeing. The postdoc will lead scientific publications arising from this work and contribute to project deliverables.

This position is suited to an early-career researcher interested in the intersection of urban nature, wellbeing, governance, and schoolyard design. It offers the chance to work in an international, multidisciplinary setting, build a strong research network, and develop an independent research profile.

The appointment is 0.8 fte and initially for 12 months, with the possibility of extension for up to 3 years subject to satisfactory performance. Applications close on 2026-11-19.
