About this position
Postdoc Position in Medicinal Chemistry at Utrecht University, Faculty of Science, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
This postdoctoral project sits at the interface of medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, computational drug discovery, virtual screening, AI techniques, and organic synthesis. The successful candidate will contribute to the discovery and optimization of novel Piezo1 inhibitors for sickle cell disease. Initial inhibitors have already been identified, so the role begins with promising starting points for further refinement and broader screening.
You will join the Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery division within the Utrecht Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and work in the research group of prof dr. Roland J. Pieters. The group focuses on structure-based optimization, X-ray structures, spacer optimization, virtual screening, AI-driven small-molecule discovery, and biologically active compounds for disease-linked proteins. The project also involves close collaboration with researchers at UMC Utrecht, where compounds will be assayed, and periodic user committee meetings with experts in the field.
The position provides access to modern synthetic laboratories, advanced analytical equipment, biolabs, and large-scale computation facilities. The work environment includes NMR, LC/MS, mass spectrometry, HPLC systems, preparative instrumentation, UPLC, HILIC, and HPC resources for computational studies.
Applicants should have a completed PhD in Medicinal Chemistry, experience in organic synthesis of drug-like compounds, experience in molecular modelling/docking and developing bioactive compounds, and strong written and spoken English skills.
The appointment is for one year with the possibility of a one-year extension after positive evaluation. Salary is between €3,706 and €5,760 gross per month depending on qualifications and experience, based on a 38-hour working week, plus 8% holiday pay, 8.3% year-end bonus, a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible employment conditions.
The application deadline is 18 November 2026. Apply through the university’s Apply now button. Prepare a motivation letter, CV, names and contact details of at least two references, and a copy of your PhD certificate or a letter from your university stating when your defence will take place.
