About this position
Radboud University is offering a postdoc position in Uncertainty Quantification for Power Systems within the NWO-funded UTOPYS programme (Understanding Large, Complex Power Systems). The position sits in the Department of Mathematics in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, and is part of a wider consortium of eight leading Dutch institutions working to advance the theory and simulation of modern power grids.
The research addresses a timely challenge: how to keep future power systems stable as wind, solar, and power electronics become dominant, and how to quantify the uncertainty in simulations of those systems. UTOPYS is building a state-of-the-art real-time electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation facility at TU Delft. Radboud’s contribution is to develop the uncertainty quantification methodology that makes results from this infrastructure more reliable, robust, and interpretable.
The appointed postdoctoral researcher will work on advanced computational methods for large-scale power system simulation. Possible research directions include model reduction, system identification, estimating parameters and topology changes from measurements such as PMU data, and generating realistic families of parameters so that large models can reflect variation rather than relying on identical defaults. The project combines scientific computing, numerical modelling, and power-system analysis, with opportunities to contribute to the shared transmission model and to work alongside other UTOPYS postdocs.
The postdoc will be part of the research group of Gabriel Lord and Laura Scarabosio. Regular joint sessions with the consortium at TU Delft will provide access to the real-time EMT simulator and collaboration on the broader UTOPYS programme. The role also includes conference participation, workshop engagement, and publication of results in peer-reviewed journals.
Eligibility highlights include a background in scientific computing and a strong fit with computational mathematics, numerical methods, and power-system simulation. The advert does not specify a scholarship/studentship package in the text provided. The application deadline is 2026-11-27, and applications should be submitted through AcademicTransfer.

What's required
A background in scientific computing is required, with experience in advanced numerical methods for modelling and simulating large-scale power systems preferred. The postdoc should be able to develop and implement computational methods, including uncertainty quantification, model reduction, system identification, parameter estimation, and handling PMU data. Experience with real-time simulation or power system modelling is advantageous; no specific degree classification or language test requirements are stated.
