About this position
Argonne National Laboratory is seeking two Postdoctoral Appointees in the Surface Scattering and Microdiffraction group of the X-ray Science Division at the Advanced Photon Source in Lemont, Illinois, United States.
The postdocs will conduct multimodal synchrotron characterization of crystal defects and interfaces in oxides, thin films, heterostructures, and 2D materials. The research contributes to a cross-facility initiative developing an “AlphaFold for Microelectronics,” a physics-informed AI framework linking composition, structure, operating conditions, defect evolution, and functional performance.
Responsibilities include designing and performing advanced synchrotron experiments, acquiring and reconstructing quantitative datasets, and studying strain, dislocation networks, voids, interfacial morphology, and defect dynamics. Techniques may include Bragg coherent diffraction imaging (BCDI), Laue microdiffraction, ptychographic laminography, and X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS). Candidates may also develop in-situ and operando experiments under electrical, thermal, or mechanical bias.
The appointees will collaborate with microscopy, spectroscopy, and AI/ML teams to integrate multimodal datasets, validate physics-informed models, and identify causal defect–property relationships. A Ph.D. completed within the past five years or nearing completion in physics, materials science, chemistry, engineering, or a related discipline is required. Relevant synchrotron experience, scientific programming, quantitative data analysis, communication skills, and collaborative ability are expected.
The expected hiring range is $70,758–$117,925, and comprehensive employee benefits are included. Applications are submitted through Argonne’s Workday Careers portal; no deadline is stated.

What's required
Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. within the past five years or be soon to complete one in physics, materials science, chemistry, engineering, or a related discipline. Demonstrated expertise in one or more synchrotron X-ray methods, such as BCDI, XPCS, ptychography, Laue microdiffraction, or related coherent/imaging techniques, is required, along with the ability to design, conduct, and analyze complex synchrotron experiments. Proficiency in scientific programming, such as Python or MATLAB, quantitative data analysis, excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multi-institutional team are required. Preferred qualifications include experience with in-situ or operando measurements under electrical or thermal bias, multimodal data correlation or integration, AI/ML data structures and metadata practices, and a strong background in materials physics, thin films, functional oxides, or 2D materials. Applicants must also meet Argonne requirements concerning core values, background checks, and potential government access authorization.
