About this position

The Digital Ethics Center (DEC) at Yale University invites applications for Postdoctoral Associates to conduct advanced, interdisciplinary research on the human, societal, and environmental implications of digital technologies.

Working closely with Professor Luciano Floridi and DEC colleagues, postdoctoral researchers will develop independent projects related to digital ethics, technology policy, and the governance, ethical, legal, and societal implications (GELSI) of technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, social media, and the Web. The role combines individual research development with contributions to ongoing Center projects that may extend beyond the researcher’s doctoral discipline.

Associates will formulate original research questions, publish in peer-reviewed academic journals, collaborate with Yale faculty and researchers, and contribute to national and international policy and legal debates. They may also present at workshops and conferences, mentor students, participate in teaching and outreach, and engage with policymakers, industry leaders, and academic peers.

The DEC offers a collaborative and multidisciplinary academic environment supported by Yale’s libraries, research tools, interdisciplinary networks, conference opportunities, and research infrastructure. The appointment is based on campus and provides opportunities to build an academic and professional profile across academia, policy, and industry.

Funding details

The appointment lasts up to four years and is renewable annually subject to performance. Compensation is determined by experience. The position includes a competitive salary and benefits, comprehensive health coverage, conference-travel funding, travel support from the Center, and research IT support such as specialized software or computation time.

Candidates should have excellent written and verbal communication skills, openness to feedback and new methods or disciplinary approaches, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment while adapting to changing project priorities. Applications require a cover letter of no more than two pages with a clearly labeled approximately 500-word Statement of Contribution, a current CV of no more than three pages, one peer-reviewed published article, and an approximately 2,000-word GELSI research proposal.
