About this position
Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology Section, School of Integrative Plant Science, Cornell University
This postdoctoral position is based in the Khan Lab at Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The project focuses on the genetics and genomics of disease resistance in apples, with particular emphasis on fire blight and apple scab. The lab explores genetic diversity in cultivated and wild apple species to uncover novel sources of resistance and to build the knowledge base needed for future cultivar development.
The successful candidate will work on chromosome-scale, haplotype-resolved genome assemblies, apple and pathogen pangenomes, and new genotyping marker platforms. A major part of the research involves identifying resistance quantitative trait loci, developing molecular markers for breeding, and applying marker-assisted and genome-assisted selection to move resistance alleles into elite apple backgrounds.
The role is highly research intensive and combines wet-lab and computational approaches. The postdoc will design and execute genetic experiments, perform disease resistance evaluations, carry out DNA extraction and genotyping, and use sequencing and bioinformatics to dissect the genetic basis of host resistance. The position also involves research proposal development, scientific writing, and presentation of results at meetings and conferences.
The lab environment includes access to greenhouse space, controlled growth chambers, orchards, tissue culture facilities, state-of-the-art computational and genome sequencing resources, and diverse germplasm. The appointment is in-person and based in Ithaca, New York.
The project is centered on combining multiple disease resistance alleles with fruit quality and horticultural traits to support sustainable agriculture.
