About this position
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service is offering a postdoctoral fellowship with the Northwest Irrigation & Soils Research Lab in Kimberly, Idaho. The project is centered on improving sugar beet resistance to disease and abiotic stress, with a strong focus on genetic resources that can support future breeding and genetic intervention efforts.
The fellow will evaluate diverse sugar beet germplasm, including cultivated and wild accessions, with particular attention to resistance responses to beet curly top virus, Rhizomania disease, and early seedling freezing tolerance. The research combines modern plant science approaches such as genomic analysis, expression analysis, proteomics, metabolomics, and related multifaceted characterization methods to identify useful haplotypes and stress-response mechanisms.
This position offers training in plant genomics, breeding techniques, plant pathology, bioinformatics, and statistical analysis within an applied agricultural research environment. The role also includes scientific communication through manuscript preparation and presentation of findings at conferences.
The appointment is hosted by USDA-ARS at the Northwest Irrigation & Soils Research Lab and is mentored by Evan Long.
