About this position
This postdoctoral research opportunity at DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory is centered on the design, synthesis, and characterization of novel materials with two main directions: tuned optical control and membrane filtration. The project focuses on covalent organic frameworks and related functional materials, with an emphasis on how material structure can be engineered to influence absorbance and optical response, or to support filtration applications.
The work sits within the Army Research Laboratory’s Science of Extreme Materials research area and is part of the broader Army Research Directorate environment, which supports discovery-oriented research and technology development across multiple scientific and engineering disciplines. The opportunity is positioned for a doctoral-level researcher who can contribute to hands-on experimental materials research in a laboratory setting.
The post is associated with ARL Advisor Emil Sandoz-Rosado, indicating a direct research supervision structure within the ARL program. The position is framed as part of the Army Research Laboratory Research Associateship Program, which connects highly trained researchers with Army-relevant scientific and technical challenges.
The advertised research environment combines materials chemistry, engineering, and applied optical or filtration-focused materials development, with an emphasis on novel, potentially disruptive materials for use in Army-relevant science and technology.

What's required
Candidates should have completed or be finalizing a PhD in chemical engineering, chemistry, or materials science. Applicants should be U.S. citizens only and must have received their doctoral degree within the last 6 months or be currently pursuing it. Experience in covalent organic frameworks, filtration, absorbance, or controlled optical properties is desired. Experience handling chemicals is desired, and coursework in organic chemistry is desired but not required. All branches of science and engineering will be considered, although materials and chemical engineering backgrounds are preferred.
