About this position
The Department of Astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley is seeking up to two postdoctoral researchers to work on imaging and spectroscopy of resolved stellar populations in nearby galaxies. The project uses data from leading facilities including the Hubble Space Telescope, James Webb Space Telescope, Euclid, DESI, and Keck, with a strong emphasis on high-impact observational work and publication.
The successful postdoctoral researchers will join Prof. Daniel Weisz and his research group in the Astronomy Department. The group studies the stellar populations of nearby galaxies and combines observations with simulations and theory to interpret results. It includes research staff, postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduate students, offering a collaborative environment with access to major survey and treasury programs.
Research opportunities in this position include work on JWST and HST surveys of Local Group galaxies such as M31 and dwarf galaxies, a JWST treasury program targeting the Virgo Cluster, a large JWST program on the spectroscopy and imaging of Centaurus A, and a Euclid survey of Local Volume targets. Appointees will also have some scope to pursue independent research while contributing to data reduction, analysis, and new observing program development.
The role includes opportunities to lead and co-author peer-reviewed publications, help design and implement observing programs, and present results at conferences. The group is active in broader Berkeley research efforts and works closely with simulators and theorists to deepen interpretation of the observational data.
