About this position
The University of Arizona Department of Astronomy and Steward Observatory invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work with Professor David Sand and collaborators on nearby galaxies, dwarf galaxies, and resolved stellar populations.
The successful researcher will help lead large, ongoing observational projects focused on photometric and spectroscopic studies of dwarf galaxies, stellar halos, and globular clusters around the Milky Way and nearby galaxies. The work draws on deep imaging from wide-field ground-based cameras, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the James Webb Space Telescope, together with kinematic and spectroscopic datasets.
The postdoctoral researcher will develop and lead an independent research agenda while collaborating with faculty and scholars across Steward Observatory and the Department of Astronomy. The role supports research involving nearby-galaxy structure and evolution, stellar populations, galaxy halos, and globular-cluster systems, with opportunities to publish, present findings, contribute to public engagement, and mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
Steward Observatory provides a collaborative research environment in space science and astrophysics, with interdisciplinary connections to astronomy, physics, optical sciences, and planetary sciences. Researchers have access to major observational facilities, including the Large Binocular Telescope, MMT, twin Magellan telescopes, and several 1–2 metre-class telescopes. Postdoctoral researchers may apply directly as principal investigators for observing time on Steward facilities.
The appointment is based at the University of Arizona’s Tucson Campus, with start dates expected between August and November 2027, although an earlier start may be possible by mutual agreement.
